Kwasi told me about this dude from Harlem making chains inspired by Nigo. Colorful stones and pendants, super crazy. We wanted to create one for Laced Magazine. A few years later, Kwasi showed me a leather belt he was planning to style on Chris Brown. I asked who made it. He said, Ferg. I laughed like, he makes belts too? Then a few years after that, Cal played me a new artist he was working with. It was A$AP Rocky… and who was on the song with him? Ferg again! I looked at Cal like, Ferg makes music too? What I didn’t understand back then, but I see clearly now, is that he’s always been fearless in his creative expression. Never afraid to evolve. Never afraid to be vulnerable in the work. 20 years later, I get to say I art directed a&nbsp; Ferg cover for DAZED MENA.. surrounded by family. Ramshah Kanwal behind the lens, someone I’ve had the privilege of watching grow into an incredible photographer. The man, the myth, the legend Kwasi Kessie, who i’m proud to say I’ve known for almost 30 years, styling the shoot. My cousin Rob assisting! And so many friends and family showing up to create something special in Harlem, my birthplace. As like many of us, Shelley has been focused on the process, taking the time to work on himself. He’s also been working on his upcoming album with intention.For the album roll out, I wanted to focus on Shelley’s truest sense of self and growth. With the album cover, Shelley’s hair creatively spells out his birth name in length, courtesy of stylist Errin Thorton. Also, at the time of the idea, we couldn’t get our hair cut or styled which sparked the idea of new growth. I also asked myself how can Shelley express himself during a time of isolation, and came up with the idea of “The Shelley Show.” The best way for an artist to express themselves is to create their own world to display, and that’s what “The Shelley Show” is. The minute I heard Kwasi Kessie say that word, I knew we had to do something with it. Around that same time, we sat down to watch The Jessie Owens film. I was inspired by the collegiate attire from that era. I’ve always been one to create with intention, with that in mind and with inspiration from the movie, I wanted to create a signature piece for Kwasi that translated higher than simply being a piece of clothing. I wanted to make a staple piece around us–our culture–and that’s what AFRICONIC is.
